So I’ve started getting grouchy about the fact that I’ve been deleting my movie reviews as I watch the next movie. Here, then, is an archive of the mini-reviews I’ve written, starting in early-Nov ’08.

There Will Be Blood

The quiet at the beginning of this movie, followed by the intense and eerie music and the horror of the sights before you…

You get the sense that you are about to witness something terrible. At some point, 3/4 of the way through, you realize that you’ve been watching the tragedy since the opening scene.

Some movies have this unrequited tension to them – you’re so tense it hurts, and when the really awful scene finally occurs you’re far more affected. This one had a far more… gradual… quality. It just slowly dawns on you that these people, and their sicknesses, and their personalities, are the tragedy.

I must say that this movie was far more affecting and effective than I was led to believe it would be.
